"Isanami and Isanaki, symbolized by two rocks in the Pacific, gazed upon the endless ocean from the floating celestial bridge. With a jewel-encrusted spear, the divine couple stirred the masses of water. The drops that dripped from the weapon formed the first island. Upon this island, the primordial gods descended and begot all things in the world. The mountains, the trees, the lakes, the animals. And, of course, the Kami, the deities that reside everywhere in nature."

This creation myth tells the birth of Nippon, the Land of the Rising Sun, and still shapes the beliefs and lives of Japan, blending tradition and modernity. In this photography course on "Minimalist Landscape Photography," my colleague Michael Reibert and I will take you on a journey to this foreign and unknown land, with its numerous small and large paradises. No other place on Earth offers such a delicate balance between human-made perfection and harmony with nature, with its diverse landscapes, numerous spiritual temples, shrines, and torii gates, rugged cliffs, and minimalist photo subjects, all waiting to be explored through the lens. It's a paradise for every landscape photographer who wishes to capture the essence of their photos, following the spirit of Zen.

Day 1
In the morning, after all participants have arrived at Kansai Airport (KIX) in Ôsaka, our first shared journey takes us to the former imperial city of Kyōto in our rental car. There, we calmly check into our rooms and then, depending on the time of day, head to our first photo spot to get into the groove. We will have a group dinner at one of the small, traditional Japanese ramen kitchens in the area, where we will discuss the schedule and content of the upcoming days. We will familiarize ourselves with the first Japanese customs and get ready for the next day.

Day 2
The early bird catches the worm. Promptly at sunrise, our day begins in the beautiful Arashiyama Bamboo Grove on the outskirts of Kyōto. As this photo spot has become an absolute hotspot for influencers in recent years, the only sensible time to capture empty photos is the early morning. After our work is done and we have enjoyed breakfast at the hotel, our destination is the southeastern coastal city of Ise. Here, besides the significant Okitama Shrine, you will find Japan's most famous Meoto-Iwa, a very photogenic group of rocks connected by a Shimenawa rope, situated in the water.

With enough time, we have the opportunity to explore this area and immerse ourselves in a bustling mix of tourists, busy locals, and followers of Shintoism and Buddhism who come here to practice their faith and offer prayers. Photographically, in addition to the impressive Meoto-Iwa, which can be captured from many exciting perspectives, the surroundings offer other photogenic groups of rocks that are perfect for long-exposure shots. With a touch of curiosity, an adventurous spirit, and some time, compelling compositions can be found here before we leisurely make our way to Ise, our next accommodation. There, we can unwind from a day full of new impressions and enjoy a cozy dinner.

Day 3
In order to photograph Meoto-Iwa in soft morning light, we will gather at the spot before sunrise when it presents its calm side without the numerous visitors. After our breakfast (in true Asian style), we will turn our attention to the nori farms in the northern Ise Bay. These farm facilities are managed by Japanese farmers to harvest the popular seaweed in Japan. Dried nori sheets can be found, for example, as wrapping for sushi rolls or as an addition to the traditional miso soup. Since the farms are dismantled at the end of each season and their locations and arrangements vary every year, photographing these farms requires a prior search game. A bit of luck and vigilant eyes are necessary to find a photogenic farm that we can focus on. The search is worth it. A suitable nori farm, under optimal weather conditions (calm winds and gentle waves), and during low tide, becomes the perfect subject for minimalist long-exposure shots. After a hopefully successful search, we will continue our journey to the nearby Tōkai in the late afternoon, where our hotel awaits us, along with a well-deserved dinner.

Day 4
As there are usually other nori farms in the vicinity of the city of Tōkai, we will once again devote ourselves to these interesting subjects before our journey takes us to the Fukui Prefecture, located west of Ise. The rugged coastline of Tōjinbō offers many photographic opportunities due to its fascinatingly shaped rock formations, intriguing structures, the roaring sea, and a distinctive rock pinnacle in the water. It allows us to capture the movements of the waves for added dynamism in the image by using different neutral density filters or to capture calm, minimalist photos through very long exposures. Not far away is our second photo spot, a small island off the west coast of Japan. With hopefully many good photos stored on our memory cards, we will head to our nearby hotel.

Day 5
To fully explore all the photographic possibilities here, we will once again capture the rocky coastline in the morning before departing for the beautiful Lake Biwa. This large lake offers many minimalist photo subjects, such as old trees standing in the water, delicate fishing nets, and the enormous Torii gate of the Shirahige Shrine on the western side of the lake.

Day 6
After a restful night at our accommodation on the southern side of Lake Biwa, we will devote our morning to the deserted and artistically crafted Shirahige Shrine and its accompanying Torii gate. This spot often showcases its best side in the morning, with a gentle mist wafting over the mirror-like surface of the lake. Additionally, there are several small temples, such as the Floating Temple on the western side of the lake, waiting to be explored through our lenses.

Day 7
Refreshed and energized, we head west towards the Uradome coast, which we will reach in the evening. Depending on our arrival time and lighting conditions, we will explore the subjects of this fascinating coastal area before discussing the remaining days in Japan over a cozy dinner. A typical Japanese, simple Torii gate, perfect for minimalist fine art photos, awaits our cameras. Additionally, the surroundings offer some interesting trees growing on rocks as photo subjects, which can be captured in the timeless Zen style.

Day 8
After a productive photo session, we won't skip breakfast before heading to the famous Himeji Castle, a highly photogenic samurai castle with its accompanying moat. The Akashi-Kaikyō-Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the world, will be another highly photogenic and impressive photo spot of the day. This gigantic bridge connects the Tarumi-ku district of Kōbe on the main island of Honshu with the town of Awaji on the southern island of Awaji-shima, with 2×3 lanes. Our last destination for the day will be a hotel in Kyoto, which is not far away.

Day 9
After a hearty breakfast, we drive to Kōya-san, located south of Ôsaka, the mysterious city of monks. This is perhaps the most enigmatic of Japan's sacred places, as the settlement of resident clergy long remained secluded from the public eye. The ancient temple complexes and the fascinating cemetery in the middle of the forest exude a unique spirituality. Particularly at dusk, when small lamps illuminate the paths of the graveyard, this place radiates a special aura. With a multitude of intriguing subjects, countless compositions can be captured here. After darkness falls, we check into our final hotel near Kansai Airport in Ôsaka.

Day 10
Departure. After returning our rental vehicles, we will take you to the airport, hopefully reflecting on a few great, productive, and beautiful days in this wonderful, foreign land.
