VECCHIO
2018 - 2024
Vecchio (Italian for "old") - The series title, which couldn't be simpler,
describes the underlying concept of the depicted motifs more aptly than any other term, despite its simplicity. The old fishing huts, boats, and docks that can be found in many places along the coastlines of Italy symbolize for me a characteristic part of the Italian way of life that couldn't be more positive. I love the authenticity of Italy, which is also clearly perceptible and experiential in the still-operating fishing huts off the coast of Venice and Pisa. Despite the very noticeable patina, numerous rough flaws, countless makeshift solutions, and the shaky overall impression, the scattered huts convey a sense of grandeur, beauty, and resilience, making them interesting subjects for me to photograph, each likely able to tell dozens of stories. I keep returning to these places to taste a piece of the intact world felt there, to recharge, to document the pervasive decay, and to admire the tireless determination of the fishermen who defy time and age by artificially keeping the small huts alive through constant patching and repairing.
